Last week I went to the US. I was in the jury for SIGGRAPH, and also wanted to reenter the country before hitting the six month mark. I’m on a greencard and the INS likes it better that way.

I spent four days in San Francisco and three in a hotel in the suburbs of Chicago.

In San Francisco I saw a lot of friends (sorry to the ones I didn’t see!), had breakfast at the Royal Grounds on Polk every day, went to the Garry Winogrand exhibit at SFMOMA, ate at Frankie’s too many times, and had some sushi at the place around the block from where we don’t live anymore.

It was strange to be back after six months. Everything looks too clean! The free wifi in coffee shops is marginally faster! You can drink the tap water and put paper in the toilet! More seriously, I realized two things: that I really love San Francisco as much as I thought, and that going on this trip was the best thing we could do right now. Whenever we go back (and we will!) we’ll do so with a renewed appreciation of our city.

The Peninsula. Where ideas are had, deals are made, and fortunes are created almost as fast as they disappear.

The R&D team from the golden era of PDI. Plus Cassidy, Cobi and I.

I was a visitor for lunch at Pixar. Strange to go to a place that still feels like home, knowing it’s not anymore. My friend Brad has two Volkswagens.

Frankie’s.

I am a simple man when it comes to sushi.

This was the greeting Chicago had prepared for me when I arrived.

The hills in Chiapas looked amazing as I was landing on the way back.
