It’s been almost four months. And we’re still in Mexico! We didn’t really know how much we’d like this country, and how comfortable we’d feel traveling here (hint: it’s like the US, Walmarts, Home Depots and all, but cheaper, and in Spanish). When we we started, we thought that after spending the holidays with Steph’s family we’d continue on to Central America. That’s not the plan anymore. We skipped Oaxaca because we didn’t want to rush, so after a bit on the beach now, and another visit to Chiapas, we are backtracking a bit to head there. I have to fly to the States for about a week in March, so to avoid the six month tourist visa deadline here, we might “do” Belize in the next couple of weeks, just to reset the Mexican visa clock for another six months. Not that we plan to stay here all that time…
This is a fairly accurate depiction of our itinerary so far:
And these are all the places in which we got gas:

Dear Juan and Steph,
So glad to have found your blog as my husband and I are planning to move to southern Chile and are thinkning about selling our ’86 Westy for a Syncro in order to make the trip. I am wondering how you crossed the baja to Mexico mainland with the dogs? Do they still require the dogs to stay in teh vehicle? We will be travelling with our pooch as well so any tips on crossing borders would be great. Safe travels to you and Viva Mexico!
Michele
Hi Michele! What lovely plans, we can’t wait to get to southern Chile (in a year or so…) We’ve done pretty well so far in our non-Syncro Westy, although we have had to rely on the help of beautiful strangers from time to time. Crossing from Baja to the mainland is a big deal for all dog-owners. We took the TMC cargo ferry, an alternative to the commercial passenger ferry, and it was a great time. Two other couples traveling at a similar time did the same thing and we all had nothing but good experiences. It’s also cheaper. Win-win-win situation! Check back for more updates on border crossings, since we’ve only done Mexico so far (which was a non-issue). Good luck with your research and planning!
