In contrast with Stephanie’s right-brain retrospectives, I wanted to post some left-brained numbers about the trip:
Time on the road: 621 days, or 1 year, 8 months, and 14 days.
Miles driven: 32,107
Gallons of gasoline: 1950.6
Average MPG: 16.46
Gas stops: 186
Number of flats: 0, not counting the flat we got on our ride home from the airport, in San Francisco.
Number of tows: 1
Number of days “stranded” because of mechanical problems: about 4.
This is the map of all our gas stops. It does a nice job of showing where we have been, and worringly, where we haven’t:
And here is a graph of how many miles we drove over time. The flat areas are times in which we weren’t driving, and the higher the slope of the curve, the faster we were going. There’s three big flat areas: the time we spent in San Cristobal de las Casas, the time when we left the van in Panama and flew to California, and the month we spent in Buenos Aires. It looks like we indeed picked up the pace a bit after we crossed into South America!
I’m a Pixarian and former Westy owner that’s been following your trip. It’s been super fantastic and I hope that I get to do something like this someday. Photography and traveloguing have been so great!
