While Stephanie was in Chicago last week, my friend Patrick came to Costa Rica from San Francisco.

Milo was really confused. Did I replace Stephanie? Why didn’t this stranger let him ride in his usual seat, looking out the passenger window? He started liking Patrick by the end though.

Patrick is a really sporty guy, so I was fully prepared to go on long hikes, rent kayaks, zip line down mountains, maybe fight a couple of tapirs with our bare hands. Instead, we drank a bunch of beer, took photos of a volcano, hiked around the volcano, then drove to the beach to spend a couple of days there.

On the way back from the volcano, there was this mud slide, which required us to take a detour through some Baja-quality dirt roads.

It was a great time, and I was happy to see my buddy from San Francisco. Next time we meet will be at the coffee shop, or for sushi at our usual place around the block from the old apartment on Jackson street.
