Our month in Buenos Aires is ending today.

I’ve shot very few photos here. Part of it is that I’ve been here before. Part of it is that it’s been so hot. And the other part is that I don’t like showing my camera because this city has the unfortunate reputation of being a den of thieves. During my last stay in Buenos Aires, two friends had their cameras taken. When my brother and sister-in-law were here last month, they were targets of the ‘ol bird poop scam, where something smelly is thrown on you and then people who appear to be Good Samaritans step in to help clean you of said goop and your valuables. Fortunately my relatives got out of that one with their possessions. My mother also had her watch stolen visiting this glorious city several years back. I’m extra-careful in this town. Tourists aren’t the only targets, although they’re probably the easiest. Every resident probably has at least one story of getting ripped off.

And lastly, I bought way too much cotton yarn at this lovely yarn store (on Carlos Calvo between Bolivar and Defensa in San Telmo) to make this summer sweater, and had enough to make a market bag and a teddy bear out of it.

All in all, it was odd to pass a sort of boring, restorative month in such a stressful city. Between the power outages, the hottest December on record, visiting relatives, and staying on top of the currency situation, it would be hard to call it “relaxing.” But I’ve forgotten how much mental energy road life takes, and how nice it is, just for a month, to spend the mornings eating pastries, the afternoons taking naps, and the evenings eating ice cream.

  1. Hopefully the weather has improved….Record snow and cold in Chicago, severe drought in California and heat in BA! Love
