This was the road from Panajachel back to Antigua. It was like being back in Baja, but actually passable.
All the overlanders seem to camp at VisiĆ³n Azul in Panajachel. It’s got a pool, a nice lawn, and is next door to a fancy hotel with a helicopter landing pad. But the campground had one major bummer: sand flies that bit us up to hell.
But closer to town, in the left of the above photo, is the Tzanjuyu Bay hotel, where you can also camp, without such a hike into town.
In Panajachel we were caught in a sudden downpour that turned the main road into a river. We were forced to take Milo back to the campground in a Tuk-Tuk and returned to find that we had left the Westy’s hatch open, so that the inside had gotten pretty wet. In the morning, we saw this parade.
We’ve seen a lot of parades with kids, and this one was very strange. It had baton twirling girls and everything but it seemed to lack the vim and vigor of all the parades we had seen in Mexico. Also absent was confetti.
A short post, but with more photos at limpire, after yet another photo of Juan, enjoying a soccer match in Antigua.
sand flies!! they call them chichas in Panama…. they are NASTY!… try baby oil, or something with citronella….. I had the ronchas for 3 month after returning from Panama….
The bites you get there are the worst. Took me a week to heal. They all became blisters and itched like crazy. But you can’t beat the view and it’s nice that they let you use one of their hotel rooms to take showers in.
